I’m thrilled to have a guest post today from Julie Garcia. Julie is a fellow designer and Francophile who is a contributor to Simon+Kabuki’s lifestyle blog, Designer Droppings. We have many things in common — including surviving the same rigorous design school program, have a love for all things type-related and both our spouses happen to be in the same industry! I love Julie’s fun writing style and am honored to have her here on PaperCuts today sharing with us about something that we are both passionate about: Typography and design! Welcome, Julie!

Thanks Cathe for giving me the opportunity to guest post here on PaperCuts. I get to write about three of my favorite things: design, wine and type. I’m not gonna lie, add type to any list and I am a happy girl. It is a bit of an addiction I have.
I love to drink wine but I am not a wine expert. So that usually translates into a bottle of wine purchased based solely on how the wine label looks. Wine labels that draw me in have a cool design, great use of type, or look vintage-cool. Then, if the wine flops, at least the bottle looks good on the table!
My first introduction to French wine was in grade school (not by drinking of course!). My sister had a friend named Gamay Beaujolais. She was very popular and obviously named after her parents favorite wine. Her name always fascinated me. This was before it was “in” to give your kids a “different” name. Now, it would not be as unusual to run into someone named after wine.

French and Italian wine labels are some of the most traditional designs out there. I am usually drawn to a more modern stylistic approach to label design, but there is something warm and nostalgic about the traditional motiffs. They are beautiful homages to the regions that produce the best wine the countries have to offer.
Most French wine label designs fall into what I call the vintage-cool category. I love the idea of applying them to useful items that also make fun home accents. Etsy is a goldmine for fun applications of vintage wine labels. I think I really need this pillow to kick back with while sipping a glass of red and obsessing about type.
